  • Discussion and Planning: Tuesday, March 18, 6-8 pm, Mt. Horeb Public Library

After more than a decade of stability or improvement, the mental health of adolescents plunged in the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide rose sharply, more than doubling on most measures. Why? In his eye-opening book The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt unpacks the sharp rise in adolescent anxiety, depression, and self-harm since the early 2010s, exploring the dramatic shift from "play-based childhoods" to "phone-based" childhoods.  He investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults.   In this New York Times bestseller, Haidt issues a clear call to action.

We hope you'll read the book and join discussion and help create a Mt. Horeb Community Action Plan to help curb this epidemic.

Brenna Marsicek, Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance

Up to 3.5 billion birds die every year in the US after hitting windows, and almost half of those happen at homes. The good news is that the solutions are easy and affordable! This presentation will share some science behind why birds hit windows, and provide recommendations on ways to address problem windows at home and in our communities to make migration and buildings safer for birds.

A companion program to The Anxious Generation Community Discussion. All welcome, even if you didn't attend the March 18 event!

Join us as we take an inside look at the data behind the scientific debate on the relationship between social media and teen mental health. Along the way we will unpack what science can and cannot tell us about social media and teens, and how teens and parents can use science to successfully navigate our social media saturated world.

Jane Shawcroft is an incoming Assistant Professor in the School of Communication at The Ohio State University. Her research focuses on understanding how technology plays a role in the social and emotional health of teenagers. In particular, she is interested in finding ways that policymakers, parents, and teens themselves can leverage technology to support positive outcomes.
